Best Walkie Talkie Buying Guide

Best Walkie Talkie Buying Guide

Do you remember playing cops and robbers with your cousins and friends when you were young? Pretend robbers would feign stealing things around your play area and pretend cops would plan a bust and talk to each other using your toy walkie talkies. Or you might remember going on a wilderness adventure with your parents and each one of them had a walkie when you split up into teams. Those days were so much fun and walkie talkies were the pinnacle of coolness! Maybe they aren’t as big of a craze with your kids now – these days they all want the hottest new cellphone – but if they give it a chance, we’re sure that they will find a lot of uses for these cool two-way radios that are just as useful as they are fun.

What can you use a two-way radio for?

In this age of cellphones, the walkie talkie or 2-way radio is still one heck of a versatile communication system. Originally invented for use by the military, it has been adopted in different industries that require short to medium range communication devices. These days, your children probably just see them being used by security personnel and fire fighters. But acquiring a few units for your family can be very useful as well. You and your family can use walkie talkies for:

• Your trips to the mall

2-way radios can actually have a range of just about 5 miles (although some would claim to reach farther and wider) to be effective in a place where there are a lot of obstructions – such as in office and school buildings where there are a lot of walls. But it doesn’t matter because a you’re never too far away from each other when you are in a mall. So if you are in the mall with your family and you find that you need to split up to complete your tasks, it’s a good idea to have a walkie talkie to get in touch with each other especially when all you want is to have a quick word. You will find that the walkie talkie is faster than texting or calling. The best part is that you won’t incur charges on your mobile phone bill.

Top 5 Best Walkie Talkies

• Outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, climbing

When the product description of a 2-way radio claims to have a really wide range of 30 miles or wider, they really mean it as the product’s maximum potential range if the radios have a clear line of sight. The line of sight is a straight line between the two units. This means that you can fully take advantage of your walkie talkie’s range on top of mountains and across valleys where you would likely be hiking, skiing, or climbing, or doing some sort of wilderness adventure. These are also places that are not likely to have cell sites, so you will really get great use out of your radios when you’re outdoors. Maybe it’s time to plan a wilderness survival camping trip with the family!

• In case of an emergency

In case of a calamity that causes major cell sites to go off service, you will be really glad that you have a walkie talkie. Being able to get to communicate with your loved ones brings peace of mind and allows you to plan how you are going to move through a disaster. It also makes for a great way to reassure a family member who gets separated from the pack. In addition, you can use your walkie talkie to communicate with emergency personnel should things really go wrong. Truly, in unforeseen circumstances that place your family at risk, a two-way radio is of immeasurable value.

• Long range baby monitor

Of course we don’t recommend leaving your baby alone and travelling as far as your two-way radio will allow you. But if your baby monitor ever breaks, your walkie talkies can serve as a substitute until you can get your baby monitor fixed or until you buy a new one.

• Fun with the kids

The best way for kids to learn is through play. You can bond over teaching them to use a walkie talkie and maybe have a few laughs as you use code names and to contact each other. Maybe your kids want to play a game of cops and robbers? They can have a lot of fun without even realizing that they are learning the important skill of using a radio.

Features to consider when buying a walkie- talkie

Surprised that a walkie talkie is still a relevant communication tool in this day and age of cell sites and wifi? It’s high time for you to go out and buy a set for your family. Just remember the following features:

● FRS or GMRS

FRS (or Family Radio Service) and GMRS (or General Mobile Radio Service) are bands frequently used by two way radios. GMRS has a much larger range, however, licensing from the Federal Communications Commission is required to use this band. Most walkie talkies for personal use operate in FRS, but you will want to ask the vendor to make sure you are getting radios in the correct band.

● VHF or UHF

If you are buying more than one set of walkie talkies, you might want to pay attention to whether you are buying VHF (very high frequency) of UHF (ultra high frequency) radios. VHF frequencies tend to be loose and longer, making it the best option for covering wide distances and penetrating through foliage. UHF, on the other hand, makes for shorter waves. These can penetrate through building walls. Of the two, UHF is the more versatile.

The thing with VHF and UHF is that they are not compatible. So if you’re buying more than one pair of walkie talkies, make sure that they are all of the same kind.

● Distance

As mentioned earlier, walkie talkie manufacturers will probably specify the farthest distance that the walkies will be able to communicate with each other if there are no obstructions between them. A product that has a specified range of 8 miles will probably be useful for only 3 or 4 miles in a building with a lot of walls. So make sure that you buy a set that will reach as far as you need them to go. Just remember that the wider the radius of your walkie talkies, the more expensive they will be as well.

Best Walkie Talkie

● Location

The matter of where you are going to be using your walkie talkies is also an important factor in purchasing a product. Will you be using them where there are a lot of obstructions such as in a building or in a mall? Or will you be using them so you will be able to communicate from any point in your family’s farm? Knowing your location is a great indication of your needs. As a rule, VHF radios can reach far and wide across open spaces and bodies of water while UHF radios are pretty nifty for penetrating walls.

● Channels

Walkie talkies communicate with each other using channels or frequencies. Information from the device creates waves of varying speeds. The speed of the sound waves is what we call the frequency and when your two radios are operating in the same frequency or channel, then you can talk to each other. FRS radios can have as many as 14 channels and as little as 2. But the reason that you would want to have multiple channels is so that your frequency will be less likely to be interrupted by other two way radios in your area. Some radios can even scan all available frequencies, and this might be a feature that you want to look for in a two-way radio. One thing to note is that radios with more channels are more expensive, so you might want to get as much as would fit your budget.

● Battery

You can buy radios with rechargeable batteries or those that use alkaline batteries. The most convenient, of course, is to look for a pair that can use both rechargeable and disposable batteries as a power source. But, if your choice is limited, we recommend buying walkie talkies that use alkaline batteries in case you find yourself in areas where you could not recharge your batteries. Alkaline batteries are more widely available and it is not too cumbersome to carry extra packs, this makes them very useful in an emergency.

● Other features

Some two way radios are no longer your basic walkie talkies. Some additional features include:

  • Backlit LCD screen and keypad so you can see and use the walkie talkie in the dark without the use of a flashlight
  • Lock key that keeps your radios in the same frequency for quick contact
  • Sub-channels that allow fine tuning of your signal by breaking each channel down to multiple frequencies
  • Channel recall that lets the device “remember” the last channel used
  • Incoming call alert that rings or vibrates first instead of broadcasting right away
  • Weather radio that allows you to pick weather reports
  • A mic and earphone jack for hands free communication

Amazing how technology made walkie talkies even better huh? These added features, though, are what is called nice to haves instead of must haves. But there really should be nothing stopping you from getting the most modern units available.

Tips for using your 2-way radio

  • Designate a “BASE.” This is the person who calls the shots in case everyone needs to get to one place or to follow a specific instruction in a hurry. The base person can be either Mom or Dad.
  • Give each other nicknames when you use a 2-way radio. It protects your privacy, even in just a small way. Besides, you and your kids will have so much fun calling each other by your special names.
  • Learn “walkie talkie talk.” It might sound a bit formal or even funny to use words from old cop movies, but they really do help communication. Teaching your kids to communicate in “two-way radio speak” is a good habit that will serve them in the future.
  • Coming up with your own codes might be fun but probably not a good idea in case your child needs to communicate with an emergency volunteer. Stick to the basics!
  • Even though you have taught your young child to use a walkie talkie, it is still a good idea to have them accompanied by adult at any time they will be at a distance from you. They will always be more secure with a person they know. Remember, safety first!
  • Always have extra batteries. You’ll never know when you might need it.

Top 5 Best Lighted Makeup Mirrors | 2017 Reviews

No woman who’s even somewhat serious about her makeup can do without a lighted makeup mirror. Whether it’s a cheap model on a stand, a unit you’ve mounted onto the wall or one built into your wardrobe or vanity, there’s no way to be certain that your makeup is “just right” without being able to see it close-up and under proper light especially when applying foundation. And, of course, tweezing, plucking or shaving is next to impossible to get right without having a perfect view of what you’re doing.

Everyone has their own preferences on the features they want in a lighted makeup mirror. Some want close-up magnification so they can be certain their eyeliner has been applied perfectly, some feel that natural light is essential to ensure their look in the bathroom is the sams as the one they exhibit outdoors, and some simply want a functional mirror with lights which lets them see what they’re doing.

Just as with makeup, there’s an enormous range of prices you can pay for a decent lighted makeup mirror. However, the basics of these mirrors are fairly standard, so even if your budget doesn’t allow for the purchase of an expensive model, you don’t have to compromise too much to find a good mirror. And if you’ve got a couple of hundred bucks to spend, you can really go all out.

Before you go on with our list of top picks, you may read our Best Lighted Makeup Mirror Buying Guide first.

Done? Here’s a look at the top 5 best lighted makeup mirrors (or lighted vanity mirrors as some may call it) currently available.

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror, 8 Inches

Simplehuman Sensor Mirror, 8 Inches

Simplehuman makes home products which at times seem more suited to The Jetsons than a normal home. There’s not a whole lot you can do to a lighted makeup mirror to make it space-age, of course, but simplehuman has managed to make their offering modern and fun.

To start with, the cordless Sensor Mirror does just what its name says – when it senses a face in the glass, it turns on the “Tru-lux” LED lighting ring located around the mirror’s circumference and simulates natural light that’s brighter and more color-correct than any of its competitors. The lights are well-designed to provide even and optimal light without shadows thanks to carefully-placed micro-reflectors, and the mirror can be recharged via USB cable for a charge that lasts weeks. For stats geeks, the light is rated at 600 lux with a color rendering index of 90.

The mirror itself is equally well-designed. It’s precisely curved so that you don’t see the “fun house” distortion that’s often a problem with flat makeup mirrors (even at the edges), the glass is backed with a high-purity aluminum coating to provide a clear reflection, and it features 5x magnification to allow a perfect close-up view of your face even if you’re sitting a foot away from the mirror. We should also mention that it’s an attractive and modern-looking mirror.

The one feature we were surprised that simplehuman left out was a choice of magnifications; the makeup mirror is one-sided, so you can’t turn it around for a 1x view (or any other view) as you can with many other products. All you get is the 5x magnification provided by the front side – which is more than sufficient in any situation. We would just hope for a little more on a top-of-the-line makeup mirror. The Sensor Mirror does tilt back and side-to-side 180 degrees, and it can move up and down on its stand allowing you to use the mirror even if you’re standing up. So the lack of extra magnification isn’t a design flaw but simply a decision made by the manufacturer.

We only have one other minor negative to point out on this mirror. The sensor is designed to be “smart,” learning your behavior so it won’t turn off if you move or turn your head, but it doesn’t take into account the fact that you often have to lean away briefly to get some makeup or a brush – so it may turn on and off a number of times when you use it. A lag time of a few extra seconds before turning off, or a “continuously on” switch, would be nice. (The other potential issue, of course, is if you have the mirror in your bedroom and your husband keeps walking in front of it when you’re trying to sleep in a dark room).

Minor flaws (or nitpicking) aside, this is one terrific product, and we didn’t even have to consider alternatives before placing it at the top of our list of top 5 best lighted makeup mirrors. It’s expensive, at about $155, but well worth it if you can afford it. There’s also a wall-mounted version that costs $20 more.

Zadro 10x Next Generation LED Vanity Mirror

Zadro 10x Next Generation LED Vanity Mirror

Those who don’t want to spend $150 on the simplehuman makeup mirror – and who are very fond of the way they look – should closely consider this Zadro option. Like the more expensive choice we’ve just discussed, it is slim and nominally large in size with LED lighting around its circumference, it’s an attractive (satin-nickel finish) countertop model, and it’s cordless. However, it sells for a more reasonable $70.

Why is it half the price? To start with, the mirror is battery-powered and requires 4 AAs to be changed regularly. It’s not adjustable, either up-and-down or side-to-side. It’s not sensor-powered, using a simple on-off switch instead (you may see that as a benefit). The functional area of the mirror is smaller (only 6 inches). And most importantly, the LED illumination is harsher, not really simulating daylight very well.

OK, then why is it #2 on our list of top 5 best lighted makeup mirrors? Some of the rationale involves its much lower price, no doubt. But there are several features which make the Zadro a good choice for many. It is dual-sided, with normal magnification on one side and 10x magnification on the other side and that’s why we mentioned that you should be fond of the way you look when you purchase this mirror. 10x is a lot of magnification, more than you’ll see on many competitors; that may be way too much for some, but just right for others who need close-up views of eyelash extensions, for example. It’s also lighter than the simplehuman mirror, so it can easily be taken from room to room, or even taken on overnight trips.

The Zadro Next Generation is far from a perfect mirror. But it’s a very good one in its price range.

Floxite Daylight Cosmetic Mirror

Floxite Daylight Cosmetic Mirror

We weren’t sure whether to rank this mirror above or below the Zadro. It’s a little larger (with a functional 7½ inch mirror surface), has better daylight simulation, and is $25 cheaper. However, it only runs on AC power so you’re required to be tethered to an outlet, the light is provided by a single bulb so it’s uneven across the face of the mirror, and it’s made from white plastic (partially explaining the lower cost). Which is a better choice? We’ll leave that decision to you.

The Floxite model uses a replaceable T5 daylight bulb, which provides a lot of light and replicates the look of daylight around the rim of the mirror well, although not perfectly (and not as well as the simplehuman). Like the Zadro, it’s a two-sided model with no magnification on one side, and the same huge 10x magnification on the other. We did like the adjustments possible with the mirror arm, allowing you to see your face from just about any angle. This is also a tall (14 inch) appliance, which probably won’t make much difference since the wall power required makes it unlikely you’ll be moving this model from room to room, but could come into play if you have a small space in your bathroom or on your bureau to work with.

The Floxite Daylight Cosmetic Mirror doesn’t have some of the features of higher-priced makeup mirrors on the market. At 40 bucks, though, it’s a good choice for an LED daylight mirror for those not able to spend a lot of money on one.

Jerdon HL165CD Wall Mount Makeup Mirror

Jerdon HL165CD Wall Mount Makeup Mirror

Some people simply don’t have room on their counter or vanity for a makeup mirror. The Jerdon is designed for them, as it mounts directly to the wall like the ones you see in hotels, swinging out for use and tucking away when not needed.

At first glance, this looks like the equal of some of the models we’ve already discussed, with circular LED lighting and a polished chrome finish. However, there are definitely some issues you should consider.

First of all, this mirror has to be hard-wired to your electric power; you can’t just plug it into the wall. That means you’ll probably need an electrician to install it, which may or may not be more of a pain or expense than you’re looking for. Second, the 25-watt bulb that provides the light for the mirror isn’t particularly strong, let alone a daylight bulb (although it does have a dimmer switch, somewhat strange for a light that isn’t overly bright). That means this unit is best used in bathrooms or other areas that already have an adequate light source. Like most of the mirrors we’ve discussed, the Jerdon is “listed” as being eight inches in diameter, but the mirror face itself is closer to six inches.

The arm on the mirror extends out more than a foot, and the two-sided mirror (with 1x and 5x magnification) can be rotated 360 degrees so you can use both sides. The Jerdon comes with all necessary mounting hardware, as you would expect.

This makeup mirror doesn’t measure up to the very best units on the market in terms of performance, but it’s designed for a specific group of customers. If you’re one of them, this may be $92 well-spent.

Conair Double-Sided Lighted Makeup Mirror

Conair Double-Sided Lighted Makeup Mirror

It’s budget time! This Conair model is nice-looking, light, and a very good value at only $20.

Yes, the actual mirror is only 4½ inches in a 12-inch tall countertop pedestal. Yes, it uses an incandescent bulb (R86) that’s not easy to find (you normally have to order it from Conair) and doesn’t give off a tremendous amount of light.

But it does also have flexibility. It can run on either AC power (with a nine feet cord) or three AAA batteries and it’s lightweight, so you can move it anywhere you want to use it. It has a halo light that may not be powerful but is evenly distributed, and it is modern- and elegant-looking with a polished chrome finish. It has a two-sided mirror, one with 1x magnification for normal work and the other side featuring 5x magnification for close-up styling.

In short, the Conair isn’t a mirror for those who need bells and whistles, or those who want to simulate bright daylight for intricate detail work. For twenty bucks, though, it’s a convenient and portable way to check your makeup – or to apply it, in a room with supplemental light available.

Tips for Keeping Warm at Home During the Winter Season

Tips for Keeping Warm at Home During the Winter Season

It’s winter season and you’re listening to Louis Armstrong’s Baby, It’s Cold Outside. It makes you want to stay inside where it’s warm and toasty, right? Staying warm and toasty indoors isn’t always an easy feat, though. It is, however, very possible. It may even be accomplished while saving money on utilities since there are a few tricks on how to stay warm in winter. Winter season is actually a great opportunity to cut back expenses on utilities. In Summer, air conditioning may prove to be a necessity and there may not be a way to go around it to keep cool. The good news is that staying warm during the cold days will not always require you to crank up your heaters at home. There are plenty of practical ways to stay warm. No matter where you may be staying, some tricks on how to stay warm at home are virtually universal.

Minimize the flow of wind into your house.

It is always of utmost importance to block the wind from coming into your home if you want to get warm and stay that way. Winter drafts have been known to drop the temperature by a hundred percent, possibly even more. Watch out for air leaks. Check your doors and windows, and be sure to seal them off to prevent cold air from sneaking in.

Hang up those curtains on your every window, and make them serve their actual purpose. They are more than just decorations. Curtains are very useful in stopping winter drafts. Use super thick drapes to stop drafts from leaking in through your windows.

Much like curtains, portieres are also helpful in stopping that draft. Hanging portieres is an old tradition of hanging floor-length drapes in between rooms. These drapes prevent drafts from wide hallways or unused rooms from seeping into rooms you would rather keep warm.

Keeping Warm at Home During the Winter Season

You may also plant wind-blocking hedges around your house to stop strong winds from blowing into your house. Other wind-blocking structures that you may consider are tall fences or trees. Pay special attention to the north side of your home.

If you are looking for a more permanent and drastic way of stopping winter drafts, and you have enough budget to spare, you may consider building a vestibule around your front door, especially when your front door opens directly into your living room. Small glassed-in vestibules could work. They are small enough and will not take too much space, yet they are still able to let the sunshine in to warm the house. Adding a vestibule will help you protect the insides of your home from wind that may blow in every time your front door is opened. Another way is to enclose your porch. This works against winter drafts pretty much like a vestibule does.

Insulate your house.

Keep your walls and windows insulated. Do not forget to insulate your ceiling as well since we all know that warm air tends to rise. If your house is equipped with an attic, do insulate it or fill the space up with storage. A filled up attic will aid in keeping the heat from escaping your home.

You may consider changing your window type to casement or awning windows. This type of windows provides the tightest seal and is much less drafty than sliding windows or single-hung and double-hung windows.

Add layers to your outside walls by leaning things against them. This will give you additional barriers from the cold winds.

Light it up.

Not everyone has the luxury of lighting up a fireplace so perhaps it’s time you light up all those candles you have kept on display for far too long. Aside from providing you with a good ambience for snuggling in and some good old aromatherapy, lighted candles will also provide you warmth during those cold winter nights.

Get some cooking done.

Warming your stove up to cook some satisfying meal will not only warm the air around your house but will also give you something warm to fill your stomach with. Having food in your system will definitely warm you up. Those added calories will put your body to work. A tip to keep in mind is that eating extra fats will start up your metabolism, therefore heating your body up.

Keep it hot, hot, hot.

Warm yourself up by sipping on some hot choco or your favorite cup of coffee. Although drinking cold liquids is actually a better trigger for your body to warm up, warm drinks may serve to give you the placebo effect. You may also relax with some herbal tea. Soups are excellent warmers, as well. If you’re looking to warm your body with some snack but you’re worried about putting on some unwanted weight, indulge on warm, spicy meals. These will surely keep you hot while burning more calories than you took in.

Keep your breath.

Our bodies are naturally warm so it only follows that we are full of hot air. Notice how your breath is warm? You can take advantage of that. Putting a non-suffocating blanket over your face while you sleep can help trap the warmth. Canopy beds work on the same concept. The canopy above the bed helps keep the heat coming from you in your bed while you are asleep.

Move your way around.

Moving is always a good idea. Keep your blood pumping by moving your body. This is a great way to produce your own heat. Dance along to your favorite bump and grind tune. Run around. Run in place. Just keep moving.

Unleash the yogi in you.

If you know your way around yoga, you probably know which yoga positions will help raise the body’s core temperature. While moving around is a great idea to get some body heat going, meditation works just as well. The key is focusing on your breathing. With meditation, you learn to become aware of the sensations that you are feeling and train your mind to accept them. Meditation will help you relax your body and take control over it.

Keeping Warm at Home During the Winter Season

Layer, layer, layer.

There is a reason why bundling up is a pretty obvious way to keep warm: it works. Adding some extra layers is definitely a great and cozy way to keep warm since the layers will trap your body heat. Layering is also convenient since it allows you strip off your clothing by layer once your body heats up. The important thing to remember is to keep your core warm. Do not forget to wear that extra shirt or two for layering. Keep your toes and fingers warm and toasty by wearing comfortable socks and gloves. Warm your head by protecting your ears with a muffler. If you don’t like feeling bulky, you may consider going for a long underwear instead of wearing leggings. With today’s technology, much of cold-weather apparels are now made to be slim so as to minimize that bulky feeling when you layer.

Take a warm shower or bath.

Taking a warm shower or bath will not only relax your body but will also warm up your body temperature. This is an especially helpful thing to do before going to bed.

Keep those blankets on stand by.

Always keep your feet under a blanket before going to sleep since your feet will almost always be the first parts of your body that will get cold. Keep your blankets and comforters close to your bed in case you might need to add more layers during the night. Remember to use your luxurious sheets and quality comforters first before throwing in the flannel sheets for better insulation. Layer your blankets by alternating thin and thick sheets. Depending on how cold you get during the night, it might be wise for you to invest on an electric blanket. In some cases, other people opt for a heated mattress pad. Use the electric blanket to warm your bed up. Just remember to unplug the blanket before you actually go to sleep. Electric blankets, which work on electricity, are fire hazards when kept plugged in overnight. Take special care of the cords of the blanket as well and avoid them from getting damaged by friction when ran between your mattress and box spring. It is also important to note that one should not use an electric blanket with a heated mattress pad as this could lead to overheating.

Minimize conduction.

You lose your body heat through conduction whenever your body gets in contact with something cold, like the chilly floor of your bedroom perhaps? Place snuggly rugs around your bed to avoid getting a chilling shock in the morning when you get up from bed or in the middle of the night when you make a bathroom call. Use gloves and mittens for your hands. Keep your toes protected by warm, wooly socks. Wool is perfect for insulation so be sure to stock up on wool socks. House slippers may also be a good idea to keep your feet warm as you move around your house.

Employ the good old hot water bottle trick.

Use a hot water bottle to keep you warm during your sleep. Hot water bottles that are available in your local drugstore should be good enough. These hot water bottles are filled with a liquid that may be warmed using a microwave machine. You can also use the more traditional trick of filling a water bottle with boiled water. You may simply boil water over your stove and fill your water bottle with it. Once you have your hot water bottle, place it under your blanket, near your feet. This should keep you warm while you doze off into your sleep.

Adjust the thermostat.

Consider yourself lucky if your home is equipped with a thermostat that you can adjust to maintain a certain level of warmth around your place. The recommended room temperature is around 65 ℉ or 18 ℃. If you are living with other people, determine the temperature that works for everyone. Do not be afraid to play around with the thermostat to arrive at an agreeable temperature.

Grab your cuddle buddy.

Best of all, use body heat to stay warm. Snuggle close to your sleeping partner to fully enjoy their natural body heat. During bed time, you may even invite your furry friends to sleep with you in the bed to help you stay warm.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • Stay away from alcohol. Yup, you read that right. Skip the booze. Alcohol actually decreases core temperatures. Admittedly, alcohol does make you feel warm, but those are only its initial effects. Remember that alcohol is a downer. Ultimately, it will serve to drop your body temperature down by reversing your body’s reflexes that are in charge of controlling your body temperature. Alcohol also affects your body’s ability to shiver. Shivering is an important warning sign for you to get yourself somewhere warmer. A shiver is a spasmodic contracting and relaxing of muscles, which consumes calories and generates heat in order to replace the body heat that you may have lost due to the cold situation.

Keep in mind the three-feet rule. Keep anything that may be flammable at least three feet away from your heat source, be it a candle or a space heater. Light materials, beddings, curtains and clothing may be considered flammable items.

Best Rectangular Trampoline Buying Guide

Best Rectangular Trampoline Buying Guide

Kids are just naturally bursting with energy. They have that constant vigor that we adults often envy them for. They have so much zest and spark. They need to be lively so that they could grow into healthy and well-rounded people. It would be such a waste then if we just let them spend the whole day cooped up, just fidgeting with their phones and tablets. If we give them the chance, we will find that kids actually love to run and jump around. They just absolutely love to knock the wind out of their lungs and end up catching their breath. Cardio might just be their favorite game. Wide open parks excite them. Monkey bars excite them. And, boy, do trampolines excite them!

Trampolines are actually a good place for children to direct all their energy to. What is so great about trampolines is that kids and adults alike end up having fun on it for hours, without realizing they are actually exercising. Trampolines are great for cardio exercises. They are as effective as jogging and running, probably even more, but they are not as strenuous to the knees and joints. In fact, rebounding on trampolines even improves bone density and strengthens ligaments, tendons and joints.

What are the different kinds of trampolines?

A typical trampoline consists of a steel frame on which a strong and taut fabric is stretched over. The fabric or trampoline mat is attached to the frame with the use of numerous coiled springs. Trampolines are being used for cross trainings, competitive sports and recreational pastimes. They come in a number of sizes and shapes.

● Mini trampoline

The smallest kind is the mini-trampoline. Mini-trampolines are also sometimes referred to as rebounders, trampettes, jogging trampolines, or exercise trampolines. They measure around 1 meter in diameter and are often kept for indoor use during exercises.

● Competitive trampoline

Competitive trampolines are bigger and can have a frame that measures up to 10ft by 17ft. The frames are very sturdily made and are made of steel. The competitive gymnastic of trampolining first made its appearance in the Olympics in the year 2000. The sports slamball and bossaball, variants of basketball and volleyball respectively, also make use of trampolines.

● Home trampoline

Home trampolines, although still sturdily made for our safety, are not built for heavy use. They are meant for recreational use by the whole family. Home trampolines may come in various shapes such as round or oval and rectangular, but today, we shall focus on rectangular trampolines.

What is the difference between round and rectangular trampolines?

A typical trampoline consists of a steel frame on which a strong and taut fabric is stretched over. The fabric or trampoline mat is attached to the frame with the use of numerous coiled springs. Trampolines are being used for cross trainings, competitive sports and recreational pastimes. They come in a number of sizes and shapes.

Round Trampoline

With round trampolines, jumpers tend to be pushed towards the middle of the trampoline during jumps. This naturally happens because of the design of round trampolines, where the softest part of the trampoline pad is the center. The springs of round trampolines are designed to react the same way to the impact of a jump simultaneously, all at the same time. This means that the middle part will have the most bounce.

Rectangular Trampoline

Rectangular trampolines, on the other hand, are designed to produce uncontrolled bounces. Jumpers may jump on any part of the trampoline and there is no tendency for the jumpers to be pushed towards the center of the sheet. Each spring to which the trampoline mat is attached to is able to react differently to the impact of the jump at different times. Rectangular trampolines are therefore ideal when it is expected to have multiple jumpers bouncing on the trampoline at once. Since jumpers will not be forced back to the center, there is no risk of the kids colliding into each other.

Since rectangular trampolines do not force jumpers into the center of the mat, they are most popular among families with multiple kids who would be likely to use the trampoline at the same time. Trampolines used in competitive sports also come in the form of a rectangle due to the even bounces that they can provide.

● Safety Nets

Safety is always our number one concern for our children. When bouncing on trampolines, doing tricks and twists cannot be helped. It can become quite easy to lose one’s bearings and lose sight of where one might land on the trampoline. The best rectangular trampoline will have a safety net to ensure that jumpers will remain within the mat area no matter what kinds of tricks they might be doing. Get a rectangular trampoline that comes with a quality safety net that is not only meant for display, but will also be able to deliver its purpose as well. Inspect the quality of the safety net and the sturdiness of its poles and attachments. The safety net system should be able to catch jumpers on the loose without giving in.

● Spring Guards

The best rectangular trampoline will have spring guards that will properly protect your child’s limbs from getting caught in the springs. Getting a trampoline with spring guards will ensure your child’s safety during play time on the trampoline since the risk of injury is significantly reduced.

● Weight Capacity

Trampolines, whether round or rectangular, all have weight limits. The best kind of a rectangular trampoline is one that has a superior weight limit and can comfortably accommodate adult jumpers. Getting a trampoline with a high weight limit will ensure your family can enjoy the purchase even when your children grow.

● Multiple Jumpers

Things are always much more fun when done with the whole family. The best kind of rectangular trampoline is the kind that allows multiple jumpers to bounce on it at the same time, without the risk of the jumpers colliding with each other. It is best to choose a trampoline that can accommodate several users all at once since this could mean quality family time and you will get to enjoy the trampoline with your kids.

● Weatherproof Material

Unless you have a gym in your home, rectangular trampolines are sure to be placed outside in the yard. It could go unprotected from the harsh elements of the environment. Exposure to the intense rays of the sun and unforgiving bashing of the rain could shorten the lifespan of a trampoline. The best rectangular trampoline will be made of weatherproof material. It should be able to take a beating from the ever changing weather conditions without getting its quality and safety compromised.

● Spring Quality for the Bounce

The quality of the bounce does not actually depend on the trampoline mat. It lies on the quality of the springs. The best trampoline will have high grade spring coils that can maintain its integrity for years.

● Sturdy Base

It is important that trampolines be built with a sturdy base that can support the impacts made by jumps. A sturdy base ensures that the trampoline system will not fold in or tip over during use. Rectangular trampolines may either have four legs that are diagonal to each other or two legs that run from side to side on each end. Whatever the design is, be sure to check out the stability of the legs. Check for reinforcements that brace the legs to each other. The best rectangular trampoline will have a strong base with reliable reinforcements.

● Mat Size

Another thing to consider when buying rectangular trampolines is the actual play area or the mat size. Are you in the market for olympic sized mats or will you be satisfied with a moderately sized trampoline that can support your recreational exercises? More importantly, do you have the space to accommodate a rectangular trampoline? The size of the trampoline that you will get depends on your preference. Keep in mind that the bigger trampolines cost more expensive as well.

● Accessories

Some trampoline models come with their own step ladders to make climbing in and out of the play area easier. Some may even come with basketball hoops to further enhance your child’s trampolining experience. The best rectangular trampoline will come with additional accessories that can further up their game.

How to buy the best rectangular trampoline?

  • First, do your research and look up some brands that are available in the market. Read up on their respective specifications, features and limitations. Be on the lookout for consumer reviews that give honest feedbacks on the trampolines that they have purchased. Find out the brands that come highly rated and highly recommended.
  • Decide on the features that are important for you. Does it have safety reinforcements in place? How big do you want the trampoline to be? Will you be placing it outdoors and will it need to be weatherproof? Does it need to be able to hold multiple jumpers at a time? Does it need to be able to support adult jumpers?
  • Prepare your budget. Trampolines definitely do not come cheap. Quality trampolines may run you from $600 to $2500. It is one investment that you need to be sure about so, again, do your research and only commit when you have the budget for it.
  • Inspect the product before purchasing it and keep the receipt and proof of warranty. If you are buying it online, make sure that they honor consumer rights for replacements or refunds. Check the quality of the material and the completeness of the parts. Do not use a trampoline with missing parts or damaged parts.
  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions and follow their safety guidelines accordingly. Install and set-up the trampoline system properly and completely. Do a final check before use.

Important things to keep in mind

  • Take note of the weight limit of the rectangular trampoline that you have chosen. Check the specification that is declared by the manufacturer. It is important that you follow the specified weight limit since this will ensure that you and your child should be safe when you are using it. Trampolines undergo a series of quality testing in order to arrive at these safest limits so follow them for good measure.
  • Take note of the number of jumpers allowed on the trampoline at a time. Follow what is specified by the manufacturer. It is recommended however that only one jumper be on the trampoline at a time, no matter the capacity of the trampoline.
  • Do not ever leave your children unattended when they are on the trampoline. Always supervise them.
  • Do not allow your children to perform tricks that they are not trained for. Somersaults and other tricks may cause head and neck injuries in case of a bad landing.
  • Always check the equipment before use. Damaged parts should be repaired or replaced as needed. Never let your children play on a damaged trampoline.
