10 Best Classic Movies Your Kids Will Love

We know how you've already noticed how kids can get so attached to their gadgets, right? Well, digital time for kids are overwhelmingly becoming a huge problem for many parents and families because their attention becomes hyper focused on these new technological stuffs.

We can't help but look back in the day where we spend time outside with our friends and do crazy things that get us in trouble. Back then, the only chance we actually spend time with a gadget is when our parents sit us down for a quality time watching a fun family movie while you eat waffles fresh off the waffle maker or any snack available.

Movies can inspire our kids to play outside and have plenty of fun. In fact, these classical kids movies we used to watch before gave us plenty of ideas on how to deal with certain situations and even help us become more sympathetic to certain characters that get us very involved emotionally and learn how to put our shoes in other people’s lives.

Movies nowadays are filled with fantasy and over-exaggeration that we barely find interest in watching them for the sake of letting our kids learn. Recent movies feature superheroes, zombies, vampires and other mythical characters and events that tend to steer our kids away from the reality of life.

We came up with a list of 10 awesome family movies that your kids will surely enjoy and also let them learn a few things about being a child without those gadgets. These classic movies are fun, morally upright, and realistically applicable to our daily lives—although it also includes some fantasy movies, it's still within that bracket. We've chosen 10 classic children movies. Maybe, at another given time, we can also conjure up a list of awesome animated films that are a must watch for kids of the modern age. We have arranged them by date starting from the early 1960's.

Mary Poppins

Directed by: Robert Stevenson

Year: 1964

Length: 139 minutes

Production by: Walt Disney Productions

Genre: Musical-Fantasy Film

Starring: Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke

Plot:

Mary Poppins is an adaptation of a book series written by P.L. Travers. If you are interested, a movie is also made about her starring Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers and Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. The movie is entitled, Saving Mr. Banks. Anyway, Mary Poppins is an English nanny with magical powers. She has been hired by a rich English family to take care of the kids. The movie shows the life of kids living with a nanny and the struggles and emotional detachment they feel in the absence of their extremely busy parents. This kids movie ends with the realization of family time and stronger bond that brings an entire family together.

What's our take:

Certainly packed with a lot of morals, kids learn how to understand more things than just learning from a nanny. This family movie makes both children and parents understand each other in an outsider's perspective. This is a great movie to watch because it has wonderful entertainment value since Mary Poppins has magical powers and a lot of musical numbers that your kids will love to sing too.

This is a great movie that inspires an entire family to stay together and to understand the reality of a cruel world of business in the eyes of a child. You will really get to know your kids more after watching this movie with them. This long film will serve as a great way of spending quality time with your family.

The Sound of Music

Directed by: Robert Wise

Year: 1965

Length: 174 minutes

Production by: 20th Century Fox

Genre: Musical

Starring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer

Plot:

This is an incredibly long children movie starring Maria, a want-to-be-nun turned governess for the seven children of the Von Trapp Family. Being raised by their father alone, the kids needed a governess. Maria teaches the kids how to sing and stay as disciplined as their father has taught them. Maria and Capt. Von Trapp fall in love with each other and they get married. Since the eruption of World War, Capt. Von Trapp is being asked by the Austrian government to be reinstated in his position but because he didn't like the ideology of the Nazi's, he and his entire family escape to safety in Switzerland.

What's our take:

This is a mix of everything great you'd like to find in a classic movie—good music, humor, romance, coming of age, true to historical events, and much more. This movie is a true classic that featured timeless songs taught in school for their first music class like 'Do-Re-Mi'. The Sound of Music is a dramatic historical depiction of a real Von Trapp Family—although actual events have been changed—the family movie was based on their life story.

The movie has so many characters that each person of any age will easily relate to; from teens to young kids, and even parents. This is a real family movie that moves every person to become stronger and learn how to deal with life with vigor and enthusiasm. This is a great movie all-in-all and is a definite must watch.

Annie

Directed by: John Huston

Year: 1982

Length: 128 minutes

Distributed by: Columbia Pictures

Genre: Family Musical Drama

Starring: Aileen Quinn, Albert Finney

Plot:

This is a story about the hard life of being an orphan. Annie lives in the time of the Great Depression where the entire world is cruel to practically everyone. Annie is a happy go-lucky-girl who only wishes to be reunited with her family. She gets to spend time with a billionaire and earns the love of many people around her, including Mr. Warbucks, to the point that he adopts her. The film also includes quite a number of adventures involving kidnapping and becoming part of a vital change in the community for the benefit of many orphans.

What's our take:

This is one of the top 10 family movies of all time because this kid's movie is a real roller coaster. It will make you cry and make you laugh. It will make you love the main characters in the movie and also learn how to sympathize with a hard life of other kids who aren't as fortunate as they are. This movie somehow makes your child understand the harsh reality of life in the eyes of many kids out there who do not have a family. This is a great learning curve for kids to learn just how fortunate they are to have you—and it's the perfect timing to teach your kids from talking back.

Another important thing about this movie is the way Annie acts nice, proper, and happy making people around her change and learn how to love. Being proper and good and friendly are great traits that will earn love, trust and a ton of friendship. This classic kids movie is very popular and your kids would probably have heard the song, 'Tomorrow'.

E.T.: Extra Terrestrial

Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Year: 1982

Length: 114 minutes

Production by: Universal Pictures

Genre: Fantasy

Starring: Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Henry Thomas

Plot:

This is a story about an alien who got stuck on planet earth. E.T. was discovered by a kid and is kept and protected by three siblings. E.T. develops this telekinetic relationship with Elliot and a deep bond with the rest of the kids. It then becomes a fun adventure for the kids to hide an alien and help it find its escape to go home avoiding the parents and the government agencies in the process.

What's our take:

You'll know an iconic classical movie once one of its clips is constantly being adapted to other films. E.T. showcases the most popular flying over the moon with a bicycle trick that practically got so many other movies copying it. E.T. is a really fun and happy movie to watch and enjoy with your family. This is a movie that you'll love watching and rewatching because of the humor, the love for other things, compassion, and just pure childlike innocence. It is a definite top family movie of all time.

After being savagely attacked by the Cobra Kai boys and being defended by Mr. Miyagi, Daniel requests to learn martial arts from him. In order to stop the bullying, Mr. Miyagi agrees to help Daniel practice Karate under his rules. Under his tutorage, Daniel eventually wins a martial arts tournament completely ending all of the bullyings.

What's our take:

This isn't the movie featuring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. This is the original movie where it was adapted from. The original Karate Kid is a kid's movie that revolves around bullying in general and how other kids would abuse their skills and use it to build their ego. This shows the reality of the life of being a bully and being bullied. But this ends up well since the bullied one learns how to fight back but still maintain his good principles. This is great for kids to learn how being a bully doesn't help them build confidence but rather puts them into shame at another point in their lives. This is a movie packed with morals that your child will come to understand that martial arts is not a way of beating other people up but it is a way of better understanding the body and the spirit.

The Goonies

They come across a treasure map that leads to a buried treasure. The treasure is actually a pirate ship sealed for centuries filled with booby traps which the kids end up discovering. In the process, they discover and evade a family of criminals and also sending these criminals to justice.

What's our take:

This is a fun family classic movie loaded with quirks and comedic acts. It's filled with laughter and joy and adventure that cannot break any friendship. The main idea of this movie revolves around the strong bond kids develop with their friends and how friendship teaches them to be strong and courageous. And this is also a fun way of learning that there is adventure everywhere as long as you go out and play with your friends.

Stand by Me

Directed by: Rob Reiner

Year: 1986

Length: 88 minutes

Distributed by: Columbia Pictures

Genre: Coming of Age Movie

Starring: Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jack Nitzsche

Plot:

Wanting to be local town heroes, a group of four boys embarks on a journey to find a missing boy's body. After a series of mishaps and misadventures, they eventually find the missing boy's body. They decided to stay away from the limelight and ended up doing the right thing by reporting it to the authorities anonymously.

What's our take:

This top movie classic features unlikely heroes. All of the kids in the movies have different types of problems that they deal with every day: one lost a brother, one lives with a family of criminals, one is being bullied, and another lives a scarred lives. Each of them finds their friendship a great thing that binds them together to eventually do the right thing. The movie really shows how children transition to becoming teens and it shows how they cope in a small town with very little hope for a bright future.

Although it is set in a small town with few people, the movies show the reality of life in many places around the world and we see this as one movie that really proved to have changed the lives of many. This is a very classic American coming of age film. Their adventures—despite coming from difficult backgrounds—made them stronger and incredibly mature. Each of them starts opening up to each other and become openly confident about themselves making this film easily relatable to emotional issues faced by different children. This is a really great family movie to sit on and watch with a great cup of fresh coffee from the coffee maker and a wonderful cuddle with your children.

Home Alone 1 & 2

Directed by: Chris Columbus

Year: 1990 & 1992

Length: 102 & 120 minutes

Distributed by: 20th century Fox Entertainment

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Macaulay Culkin

Plot:

This is the worst thing that could ever happen to your kid when you leave them home alone unattended. This is a true parent's nightmare come to life but actually, it happens in a really funny output. This full-on comedy showcases the wit and smart-thinking of kids that surpass the normal thinking of an ordinary adult. Home Alone is a family movie franchise but we prefer the first two movies since it features the same actor. The rest of the movies in the franchise are somehow disconnect to the first two but, nonetheless, still entertaining.

What's our take:

Although this is unlikely to happen to any home, this is still a wake-up call for parents to never leave their kids alone at home. This is also a great take in showcasing how a creative mind of a child can overcome incredibly dangerous and scary situations if they just learn how to trust their instinct. Kids are geniuses in their own way and it doesn't have to be in school. This will help you and your child understand his abilities and dwell on them as a way of boosting their confidence that they may grow to be a confident child.

The Little Rascals

Directed by: Penelope Spheeris

Year: 1994

Length: 82 minutes

Distributed by: Universal Pictures

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Travis Tedford, Kevin Jamal Woods, Jordan Warkol, Zachary Mabry, Ross Elliot Bagley, Courtland Mead, Sam Saletta, Blake jeremy Collins, Blake mcIver Ewing, Juliette Brewer, Heather Karasek, Brittany Ashton Holmes, Bug Hall

Plot:

There is nothing funnier than watching kids and their crazy quirks. This family movie classic features funny mishaps done by kids. From dressing up like adults to playing in the dirt and going around town doing odd jobs and have fun doing it.

What's our take:

This movie is a must watch for parents who are really trying to get their kids off their gadgets. There are more fun and more things that can be done in the playground or in the backyard rather than just running around with a sword in your virtual character games on the internet. The Little Rascals shows how great it is to be a kid and how utterly satisfying it is to make friends and enjoy life as a kid without the worries of tomorrow. Your kids need an awakening from the bad effects of technology and give them a kick start in life doing what they should be doing best which is playing outdoors.

Spy Kids

Directed by: Robert Rodriguez

Year: 2001

Length: 90 minutes

Distributed by: Dimension Films

Genre: Fantasy-Adventure Film/Comedy

Starring: Alexa Vegas, Daryl Sabara, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino

Plot:

This family movie is about two kids who just found out that their parents are spies. They take on their parent’s shoes to save them from the villain and end up saving the world from evil.

What's our take:

This movie isn't that old but this is definitely one fun family movie to enjoy. This movie is very adventurous. It deals with the social problems that the two main characters face on a daily basis like being bullied and still wetting the bed. Your kids will easily relate to sibling rivalry and affection and will also relate to the intimate relationship of a tight-knit family.

As parents, we will also enjoy this family movie filled with adventures that an entire family accomplishes together. It shows a lot of openness within the family and shows a lot of support. Secrets are things that are expected within the family but secrets can also be shared as one thing that binds a family stronger.

The great thing about this fun-filled family movie is that it has a lot of morals to learn from and a lot of things your kids will easily relate with. You can enjoy more of the kids if you watch the rest of this movie franchise. Watching the Spy Kids franchise is also very helpful especially if you have kids with different age ranges—like a teen and a primary schooler, where both can relate to the kids in the movie.

This is definitely one of our top picks because it encourages family openness, family ties, the courage to face one's fears, and standing strong despite the impossibility of a task. You will enjoy four spy kids movies if you're planning to have a movie marathon.

Each of these movies has strong morals that your kids will learn from. It will also jolt their hearts awake to relate to the lives—our childhood lives—without the technology and without the gadgets in their hands. These classical family movies are great to watch and incredibly fun to rewatch along with your kids. Classical kids movies are something that we should really consider showing our kids, and not just for the fun of it.

5 Best Martial Arts for Kids

5 Best Martial Arts for Kids

You got your child to watch Karate Kid starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, as Jaden's martial arts trainer, and later on, you find your child doing some martial arts moves in the backyard. You may not know it but involving your kids in martial arts has more benefits than disadvantages. And what’s so great about this is that your kids will absolutely love doing it as well.

If involving your kid in sports is a way for you to strip off some of their digital time, you may also opt for your child to stay healthy through any type of active sport. So, in the process why don’t you include martial arts for kids in your list of sports with your child in mind? There are many reasons why martial arts are good for your kids, and here are the reasons why.

• My Body

Obviously, martial arts have their physical benefits. It will keep your kids in tip-top shape from the get-go. Martial arts are not just running sports or any sport that mainly uses the upper body. It is a sport that really requires the entire body to move. Every single part of the body is used in martial arts.

Did you know that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that it is ideal for children to at least have an hour of physical development? It involves cardio activities, and muscle and bone-strengthening tasks to fully develop and tone their bodies in its perfect shape. Kid martial arts can actually fulfill these requirements since it demands every part of the body to be used. Ordinary playing like shooting balls through the basketball hoops, jumping on a trampoline or playing around with nerf guns and walkie talkies cannot really fulfill these exercise requirements.

Martial arts for kids are something that is highly beneficial to full-body strengthening and development. It involves kicking, punching, and even receiving hits.

• My Mind

One thing you will really love about martial arts is its mental training. It is true that across the martial arts world, you will learn that every art starts with a mind set. Martial arts believe that a healthy mind is a key to a healthy body. And true enough, a healthy mind really does prove to be very effective in keeping the body stay in a healthy and active lifestyle.

Mind-setting is incredibly helpful especially in keeping kids in check. Some children who suffer from some sort of trauma or stress can be treated with meditation and proper encouragement. Martial Arts for Children also teach your child great discipline, respect and proper management of emotional outbursts like tantrums and control.

• My Self

Surprisingly, martial arts make your child understand their bodies better. Your kid will discover things that he would never have imagined he could do. A great thing about this is that your child will realize that his body can do whatever it wants as long as your child puts his mind into it. Your child has many potentials and signing them up for martial arts is something that will further encourage them to trust their bodies and explore their selves. They also end up testing their limits and even going beyond it.

5 Best Martial Arts for Kids

• My Friends

Although martial art is an individual sport, your child will still receive all the same kind of support from each other. The great thing about this sport is that everything is achievable and that no one ever sits on the bench. There is always a level higher that they can advance to. The belt system is a great way to motivate the kids to go beyond. Each level includes more difficult moves and more tiring challenges that your kids must try to finish and endure. Every belt they get gives them an extra boost of confidence. Martial art is built for every kind of person and for every type of body allowing it to be able to maximize its functions well.

One reason why every mom or dad will love this sport is because no kid is left behind. No kid warms the bench and no kid receives special coaches' attention—or in this sense, sensei's attention. Everyone will always advance as long as they continue. It is not gender-specific either and it does not promote unnecessary pride but mental discipline and respect amongst each other.

• My Family

Enrolling your kids is not just something that will help them; it will help you as well. Home training is often advised and there are instances where you are also involved in the training that gets you and your child into the sport. This adds to your bonding experience with your child.

Plus, you can also learn a few stuff in trying to defend yourself. It's a great one-on-one game that you can do at home, especially a great way to get dad to bond with the kids too. On contrary belief, martial art does not really teach you any combat skills, but it teaches you the best way to use your body to avoid conflict. And you'll notice that most of the moves in martial arts involve self-defense.

Things to consider in choosing the perfect martial arts for your child

Availability

Even though you have an idea of the mainstream children's martial arts available, you need to answer the question, 'Are there martial arts for kids near me?'. This is a toughie. Even if you want your child to be involved in karate but the only martial arts nearby offers Taekwondo, you should consider the option too.

Cost

You really need to do research on how much it would cost you to enroll your child in long term. Don't think that martial arts would only be a short term thing your child will eventually get tired of. It is surprising that the drop out rate for martial arts is very low. It really needs your dedication and investment if you really want your child to try out martial arts.

The Dojo

Now that you know what martial arts classes are nearby, you need to check it out first—alone! Don't bring your kid yet. Learn about the place your child will be practicing at and also learn more about the sensei. The teacher needs to be well-trained and also a great teacher. You need to observe how one class is held and learn whether or not your child will suit the environment and the teacher. Finding the teacher for martial arts classes are really the needle in the haystack since it is the most important part of enrolling your kid into martial arts for children.

Research

Do some research first. Are the martial arts classes near you have a record? How high is the dropout rate? Is the dojo a safe environment to put your child in? How well does the martial arts facility work in the community?

So, going to the most important question, 'What is the best Martial Arts for my Kid?'

Here are the top five choices in helping you decide what's what and what will do your kids well.

Karate

Origin: Japan

Age limits: preferably 4 and above but still depends on the dojo

Focus: Kicking, Striking, Defense blocks

Why your kid should enroll and what to expect?

As one of the most popular martial arts around the world, Karate is no wonder that it is what most parents would normally enroll their kids in. One great aspect about karate is that it builds your child's body to make really quick responses and advanced reflexes.

Karate comes from two Japanese words 'kara' for empty and 'te' for hand, literally means empty hand. Karate exclusively uses the entire body for defense and makes the offense, and it teaches the body to have powerful kicks, strikes, and defensive blocks. It involves a lot of powerful snaps using the joints which require your children to warm up properly and it also teaches your kids a great deal of patience.

Karate classes for kids are created not for the sake of fighting but to direct the person to the path of knowledge. It teaches a great deal of self-respect and courtesy to others while in the process of teaching the body to learn its capabilities and to defend itself in case of trouble without the use of weapons and other stuff.

We really love karate as kids' martial arts training because it helps your child learn how to humble himself. It is also a great way of building strength and empowering the body for mental management and meditation.

5 Best Martial Arts for Kids

Taekwondo or Tae Kwon Do

Origin: South Korea

Age limits: 10 and above

Focus: Self-defense and self-control

Why your kid should enroll and what to expect?

Taek Won Do is known to be the best martial arts for kids because your child learns self-defense and self-control. Taekwondo is seen as a way of life as it learns a series of doctrines that your child must follow and these doctrines are applied in daily life. In fact, these doctrines are known to have come from the Five Codes of Human Conduct. It covers not just the body but the entire way a person lives and it focuses on meditation and the development of self-control.

This is mainly a kid's martial arts for self-defense. You will notice though that Taekwondo is actually a sport that involves great speed and agility. One thing we love about taekwondo is that it really does well for kids who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other forms of hyperactive disorders. You will love that your child will learn more than just defending their self but will also learn how to be strong in facing difficult situations even in school and studies. Everything your child learns is applicable in every aspect of their lives and teaches them how to be more mature and more controlled.

Although your child learns how to fight, this martial arts teaches your child to deal with situations properly first before actually engaging in combat. You will end up learning a lot too especially in dealing with impatience and even stress you get from work. We suggest that you take taekwondo classes with your child.

Jiu Jitsu

Origin: Japan

Age limits: 2 and above, but still depends on the dojo

Focus: Anger and Frustration Control

Why your kid should enroll and what to expect?

Originally known as jujutsu, this sport focuses on a more competitive side of martial arts. It uses the opponents' strength, weight, and attacks as means to defend oneself. Jujutsu is in a sense powerful because it uses little effort in defending making your child become strong in delivering offense.

Although it teaches powerful combat skills, you cannot remove discipline from jujutsu. All practitioners learn how to cooperate with one another and still become disciplined and well-respected individuals in the process. This is also quite ideal for girls because it uses graceful moves. It is a martial arts class for kids that prevent discrimination among genders, ages, and abilities.

Furthermore, it is a very versatile form of martial arts because no matter where you go or which dojo you transfer to—even if it's a karate or taekwondo dojo—your child can still practice Jiu Jitsu. Regarding physical aspects, these martial arts classes for kids do a complete body workout. It teaches your child to make blocks using the entire body in a graceful or fluid manner. It's like dancing with your opponent, and one thing that is great about this is that it is practiced by NFL players and professional rugby players to improve their skills in playing the game.

Aikido

Origin: Japan

Age limits: 8 and above

Focus: Avoiding confrontation and self-defense

Why your kid should enroll and what to expect?

One aspect of aikido that is highly suggested by martial arts practitioners for kids is its versatility and its counter combat skills. This means that Aikido is a gentle form of martial arts that literally redirect an opponent's energy towards themselves. To make it simpler to understand, it means that instead of defending yourself through the offense, you simply use your opponent’s strength against himself. In a sense, you're making your opponent fight himself.

It is a very practical martial art for kids that will teach defending oneself, and one thing we love about it is that even children with special needs like autism and socially impaired kids can practice. You'll love that aikido does not promote violence but steers away from it. It is actually a martial art designed to prevent the use of brute force and promotes self-control.

This is also perfect for children who are overweight and obese. Although all martial arts are great to combat obesity, aikido does not require much of the body. It needs a lot of warm-up exercises and most of the moves involve muscle building and body strengthening in simple strict moves that eventually leads to a great weight loss routine.

Kung Fu

Origin: China

Age limits: 2 and above but still depends on the dojo

Focus: Respect and Strength-building

Why your kid should enroll and what to expect?

This is probably the most energetic form of martial arts for kids. Kung Fu is in a sense the Chinese Karate but Kung Fu is more graceful and less taxing on the human body. One of the best aspects of Kung Fu is the real fun a child gets from it. It is a fast-paced martial art that requires a lot of movement. Despite its active form, it also focuses a lot on meditation so that your child will learn how to connect his body with his mind.

This great mind-setting allows your child to balance activity and meditation. It is a great sport for kids who suffer from ADHD and other hyperactivity disorders as well. What's great about Kung fu is that it isn't as demanding on the human body as karate because it feels more like an aerobic exercise.

As compared to karate, Kung Fu uses daily instruments like a stick, poles, fans and whatever it is that is lying around the house. In case of danger, your child will be able to use anything at their disposal as a form of defense. Kung Fu also derives most of its moves from nature teaching your child not only to reconnect to his body but to nature as well.

Honorable Mentions

Other forms of martial arts for kids that are also great for them are T'ai Chi and Judo. T'ai Chi focuses more on the body's flexibility, balance, weight-bearing moves, and stretching. Judo, on the other hand, is like Jujutsu. It is a competitive martial art that uses balance and weight to disadvantage your child's opponent.

Whichever martial art you choose for your child, you will never go wrong in enrolling them in it. Martial arts are not designed for combat but are taught to make your child more disciplined and more respectful. It involves more on teaching the mind to teach the body to obey. And this is a great tool to not only reduce digital time but to increase a happier, leaner, and healthier child.

Top 5 Best Eye Creams For Dark Circles | 2017 Reviews

Top 5 Best Eye Creams for Dark Circles | 2017 Reviews

Guys are the lucky ones. After an exhausting night out on the town (or in less enjoyable circumstances, a long night at work), they can get up in the morning only having to worry about taking a shower and possibly fighting off the effects of a hangover.

Women have an extra concern, whether they’re showing the morning-after effects of partying, working, or a sleepless night walking the baby around the house over and over again. Those telltale dark circles under the eyes may often be viewed as a “badge of honor” for guys, but they’re simply seen as “unattractive,” to put it nicely, on the female face.

Of course, there are other reasons some people develop those dark circles and can’t get rid of them; chronic insomnia, allergies, dermatitis, too much sun, aging and natural pigment irregularities are just some of them. Whatever the reason, the urge – or need – to cover up dark circles or puffy eyes can be overwhelming, and there are hundreds of products on the market promising to help.

Not all of them do, of course. That’s one of the huge problems in shopping for eye creams that work on challenging problems like dark circles; many serums are marketed specifically for the purpose, while they really are nothing more than glorified concealer or general-purpose serums. More than in most other categories, you have to ignore the names of these eye creams and get down to the details of what they really do.

That’s why we’re here. Here’s our list of the top 5 best eye creams for dark circles.

Tarte Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment

Tarte Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment

This multi-purpose eye cream is meant to achieve two things: firm and hydrate the area around the eyes, while making areas with dark circles and puffiness appear brighter and less obvious. It accomplishes both tasks; while it’s not focused exclusively on completely covering up dark circles like some products on our list, or exclusively repairing skin damage like others, it tackles both task and does each of them rather well. That’s why we rank it at the top of our eye creams.

The skin care component of the Tarte Maracuja relies on coconut, rice bran and mango to supply the antioxidants needed to fight damage done by free radicals and the effects of aging, EFA-rich (essential fatty acids) maracuja oil to rebuild and replenish the skin, and oat sugars to smooth skin by tightening it. The brightening aspects are handled by a combination of vitamin C (which also works to rejuvenate the skin) and the mineral mica, which adds shine around the eyes and even sparkles a bit to make the area look more alive and reflect light away from the dark areas, as the skin repair and replenishment is underway.

The thick, white C-Brighter Eye Treatment goes on smooth and creamy but doesn’t feel gooey, and it’s quickly absorbed by the skin to do its work so you won’t even know it’s there after a few minutes, unlike heavier eye creams which can make you feel like there’s something stuck in the corner of your eye all day long. Even nicer is the hydration of this product, which is noticeable immediately and leaves your skin feeling nourished. The brightening aspect of the Tarte Maracuja cream works well too, as long as you don’t expect it to wave a magic wand and make your puffy eyes or dark circles vanish; it definitely makes eyes look brighter and more alive and hides most of the circles, and over time they’ll fade away thanks to the action of the skin care ingredients. The cream is gentle and doesn’t cause issues with sensitive skin.

There are two negatives to this eye cream. The first is that over time, it loses some of its properties because it’s impossible to seal the jar tightly enough to keep all the “good stuff” from destabilizing and becoming less effective. The second is simply the price: more than 50 bucks for just over one-third of an ounce. We understand you have to pay for quality – but in this case, you have to pay a lot. If you can afford it, it’s the best dual-purpose eye cream for dark circles.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II

It’s not quite as expensive as the Tarte Maracuja, but this stuff is still pretty expensive, $65 for half an ounce. It’s also worth it, if you’re chronically battling dark circles or puffy eyes that just defy any product you try.

The Night Repair Eye Serum (there have been several generations of this product, they seem to just keep adding words to the name every time there’s a new version) is easy to apply; it is a water-based serum which goes on with a silky feel. Don’t assume that it will be a perfect “coverup” for dark circles, because that’s not what this Estee Lauder product is intended for. It does cover bags, circles and puffy eyes to a degree, but it’s primarily a serum that is applied in the morning and at night underneath a regular eye cream. Over time it erases the circles so you won’t have to worry about covering them up anymore.

There are lots of ingredients in this Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum which work to repair and rejuvenate skin, including antioxidants, tripeptides and lactobacillus. There’s alkyl guanine transferase to lessen the look of skin damage, while hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin, and caffeine removes the puffiness. There’s also a silicone derivative added to create the nice feel of this serum. It’s also not watery enough that it will end up seeping into your eyes after you apply it, and light enough that you won’t notice that you’re wearing it.

There’s no noticeable odor to the Estee Lauder serum, and even though the lasting repairs may take a while to take full effect, the moisturizing effect of the product will make you feel better right away. As we mentioned, you may want to use a concealing cream on top of the serum if you don’t feel it does enough to cover your circles, but that shouldn’t be necessary with continued use of the product. After all, isn’t it better to get rid of a problem permanently than just keep obscuring it forever?

Clinique Even Better Eye Dark Circle Corrector

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II

If you’ve been patiently reading and waiting for a product that will truly cover up dark circles while secondarily providing some nutrition for skin, Clinique’s “corrector” is the one you’ve been waiting to read about. This eye cream is designed specifically to let you go out in public without the rather-unfashionable “raccoon” look, but also will hydrate your skin as it covers the bags and circles.

There is a trio of pigments in the Even Better Dark Circle Corrector. Titanium dioxide is known for brightening skin in a wide range of cosmetics, iron oxide gives the skin around your eyes the flesh-colored, “natural” look and the mica we’ve already seen in the Tarte Maracuja eye cream works the same way here, to add a shine to the problem areas and direct light elsewhere. All together, they cover dark circles quite well – not as well as a full-scale concealer designed simply to cover up all skin issues, but close enough for a product that’s also hydrating and providing other benefits.

Those other benefits are provided by antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents like vitamin C, green tea extract and caffeine, as well as ingredients like whey protein to promote the production of collagen, linoleic acid to restore the skin barrier, and mulberry root to lighten the skin (also useful, of course, in covering skin blemishes). It’s not as powerful a lineup as you’ll find in the Estee Lauder Night Repair Eye Serum, but it will work to help repair skin damage and improve the overall look of your eyes over the course of a few months.

The Clinique corrector goes on easily thanks to its applicator with a metal tip which has the added benefit of “breaking up puffiness” as you apply the cream, if you’re retaining fluid under your eyes. We didn’t notice that, but the product goes on easily and smoothly, absorbs quickly, and makes your eyes look like they haven’t undergone several sleepless nights. It’s easier on the purse than our two previous creams as well, at just $20.

La Roche-Posay Pigmentclar Eyes Dark Circle Eye Cream

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Synchronized Complex II

This product from the well known French cosmetic company (owned by L’Oreal) is aimed at the same general purpose as the Clinique Dark Circle Corrector, primarily covering up the blemishes and circles under the eyes while including extra ingredients to promote longer-term improvement. It is just about as good and is priced similarly (it costs about $40, but that’s for half-an-ounce), so even though these products are ranked at #3 and #4, you can consider them tied.

The primary active ingredient in the La Roche-Posay eye cream is Phe-Resorcinol, a trademarked skin lightener which the company claims is one-hundred times more effective than Vitamin C. We have no idea about the science, but the product does make skin with dark circles look somewhat lighter. There’s also caffeine and niacinamide for their antioxidant and anti-aging properties (the caffeine also reduces puffiness), and instead of mica there are pearl pigments to reflect light away from damaged skin and add some shine.

The cream goes on easily (again, with a metal applicator which can work to reduce fluid building under the eyes) and has a beige-look when it’s on the skin; that helps with the concealer effect but also means that if you have darker skin you’ll have to do some blending so it doesn’t appear that you’ve thrown some concealer over dark circles (which of course, you have). The eye cream feels cool when you apply it and your eyes will look better after it’s on, but once again, any long-term improvement may take a while to see. This is primarily meant to cover up your dark circles, and for most people, it will do just that.

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream

The CeraVe Eye Repair Cream does exactly what its name says – its primary purpose is not to cover up those dark circles that show you’ve been a bad girl the last three nights, it’s been created to do long-term repair work to get rid of the circles and puffiness that have been plaguing you for quite some time.

The ingredient list for the CeraVe product tells you exactly what it’s up to. Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides and a number of antioxidants are all aimed at hydrating and restoring skin health while rebuilding the all-important skin barrier between your eyes and face. There are some botanical and marine ingredients as well which the company says will lessen the appearances of skin blemishes and circles, but you won’t notice a vast improvement when you apply the skin each day. This is more of a long-term fix.

Speaking of application, the CeraVe Eye Repair Cream comes out of the tube easily through the pointed tip, and goes on smoothly and absorbs quickly without feeling greasy, it’s unscented, feels pleasant on the skin, and won’t cause any irritation even if you have very reactive skin. It’s particularly good if the area around your eyes needs moisturizing while more potent skin healing work is going on.

We wouldn’t choose this over the Estee Lauder repair serum ranked #2 on our list of best top 5 eye creams for dark circles, but if you’re on a budget, you might. It’s a drugstore product and only costs about 13 bucks, so it’s a good bargain for that eye repair work you can tell that you need when you look into the mirror each morning.
